Description
Owatrol GLV is a highly flexible, anti corrosive coating with a high gloss finish that possesses the deep penetrating and adhesion properties of Marine Oil so the finish will not peel or flake and will even adhere well to clean, bright steel. Owatrol GLV marine aluminium paint will restore rusted and corroded surfaces to an acceptable appearance to give lasting protection and greatly prolong the life of the treated surface. It has excellent resistance to the effects of the weather and does not emit harmful fumes so can be applied even in confined spaces.
Owatrol GLV has excellent abrasion resistance, withstands chemical attack and is ideal in aggressive climatic conditions where a high resistant finish is necessary. Originally developed for the shipping industry Owatrol GLV became a favourite cargo hold coating; carrying approval for the carriage of grain. It can withstand temperatures up to 175°C once cured and offers excellent light and heat reflecting properties.
Ideal Uses for Owatrol GLV marine aluminium paint
- Coating aluminium, steel and galvanised surfaces above the waterline
- Protecting already rusted tanks and machinery
- Resisting damage in aggressive climatic conditions
- Resisting weathering effects on pipes and pumps
- Providing long lasting protection against corrosion for new steelwork
Surface Preparation
First all surfaces must be clean, dry and free from oil, grease and other surface contaminants. Remove all scale; loose and flaking rust and old paint back to a sound surface and edge and feather in any sharp edges. Surfaces exposed to chemicals (acids, alkali or salt deposits) should be washed using copious amounts of water or steam cleaned. Severely contaminated surfaces should be cleaned using an appropriate solvent.
Applying Owatrol GLV marine aluminium paint
Stir or shake the can well before and during use. Do not thin.
Applying Owatrol GLV to new steel & aluminimum
Prime new steel with 1 coat of Marine Oil and allow to dry for 24 hours. Then apply 1 coat of Owatrol GLV. For new steel or aluminium that will be subject to aggressive climatic conditions a 2nd coat is advisable.
Applying Owatrol GLV to clean, lightly rusted or new unpainted rusty steel
Apply 2 coats of Owatrol ALU allowing drying time between coats.
Applying Owatrol GLV to old or severely rusted surfaces
Apply wet on wet applications of Marine Oil until the rust is fully saturated and allow to dry. Saturation is indicated by a uniform glossy appearance to the surface when the Marine Oil is dry. Next apply 2 coats of Owatrol GLV allowing drying time between coats.
Applying Owatrol GLV to previously coated surfaces
Spot prime all exposed metal with Marine Oil or 1 coat of Owatrol GLV depending on the severity of the rust and allow to dry. Next apply 2 coats of Owatrol GLV over the entire area; allowing drying time between coats.
Maintenance
Maintenance is easy and frequency will depend on the conditions that the coated surface is exposed to. Thoroughly clean all surfaces to be coated ensuring any oil, grease and other surface contaminants are removed. Remove all loose and flaking material and feather in any sharp edges. Then apply a single application of Owatrol GLV to all areas where exposed metal or rust is showing
through and allow to dry. If desired a further application of Owatrol GLV may be applied to the entire surface.
Clean Up
Clean all tools and equipment with mineral spirits while still wet. If allowed to dry, remove with paint stripper. Store and maintain equipment as directed by manufacturer.
NOTE: Any rags, steel wool etc soaked in Owatrol GLV may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. Rags, steel wool etc must be saturated with water after use or placed in a sealed, water filled metal container, before disposing with household waste.
Things to Remember
- Cover everything you do not wish to paint
- Apply between 5°C and 35°C
- Do not apply in direct sunlight or on to hot surfaces
